In an ”SVT verifies”- article from January 29, SVT claims that the iconic image from the shooting death of Alex Pretti is fake
The problem with SVT’s claim is that it is wrong. While SVT certifies that the cellphone video of Pertti kicking the taillight of a car is real, which is correct, SVT claims in the same article that the iconic image of the shooting of Alex Pretti is fake. We will see that that statement from SVT is fake. A screenshot from CNN’s reconstruction of the event and the playback of a cellphone video shows that SVT is wrong.

When SVT writes: “This AI-manipulated image has been shared far and wide. Photo: X” everyone can see from the screenshot from CNN January 30 that SVT is doing something very strange when they call the now iconic image a fake. One can speculate whether SVT has any motive for claiming that the image is fake.

If you take a screenshot from the mobile film that CNN shows in the program from January 30: Watch the movements of two officers involved in Pretti killing, you see this image – completely genuine and you also see that the characteristics that SVT points out in the image to be signs of AI editing are in reality as it is captured by the mobile film. You can therefore see that the explanation that SVT gives for the image being AI-generated is not valid.

What SVT has got wrong and which is actually completely without news value is a detail that AP pointed out in a feature – that the screenshot of the image was enhanced with AI technology to show the incident more clearly when the improved/AI-enhanced or Photoshop-enhanced image was posted on X and elsewhere. But then, as SVT does, carelessly writing in a feature that is also tasked with separating facts from fakes, in ”SVT verifies” that: ”This AI-manipulated image has been shared far and wide. Photo: X” misleads the reader into believing that the image was produced with AI for propaganda purposes and is not real.

As everyone can see, it is a very real image and SVT’s explanation that you can tell that the image is AI because: ”Two clear signs that it is AI are that one of the agents seems to be missing a head, and a body part looks to be a mixture of a foot and a weapon” is incorrect and also dishonest when it is exactly as it appears in the original image.
